Dan Burn Burn made his FIFA World Cup debut during England's enthralling 3-2 win against co-hosts Mexico in the early hours of Monday morning. Despite kick-off at the Estadio Azteca being delayed by an hour, Thomas Tuchel's men raced into a two-goal lead courtesy of Jude Bellingham's quick-fire brace before Julián Quiñones halved the deficit before the break. Despite being reduced to ten men following Jarell Quansah's red card, following a VAR review, Harry Kane's penalty restored England's two-goal cushion before surviving an attacking onslaught in the final stages following Raúl Jiménez's successful spot-kick. Burn, who made his EFL debut in 2009 for Darlington, was brought on in the 75th minute and carried out a number of crucial defensive contributions to help the Three Lions book a last-eight encounter with Norway on Saturday 11 July in Miami [kick-off 10pm BST]. England sealed their place in the last 16 against Mexico after a dramatic 2-1 win against DR Congo on Wednesday. Burn was an unused substitute. England topped Group L by beating Panama 2-0, courtesy of goals from Bellingham and Kane, but Burn did not feature at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. England kicked off their campaign with an entertaining 4-2 win over Croatia at the AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, which came courtesy of a Harry Kane brace and further strikes from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. Burn was an unused substitute in that contest, and also didn't make it off the bench in the goalless draw with Ghana at Boston Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts on Tuesday, in which Thomas Tuchel's men were frustrated by a stubborn Black Stars backline. Bruno Guimarães Brazil were eliminated from the World Cup at the last-16 stage following a 2-1 defeat against Norway on Sunday. After a goalless first-half at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which saw Guimarães miss from the penalty spot after his spot-kick was saved by Orjan Nyland, Erling Haaland's late brace ultimately proved the difference despite Neymar's stoppage-time penalty. Brazil recorded a 2-1 win against Japan in the last-32 stage, with the Newcastle United captain threading a pass through deep into stoppage time for Gabriel Martinelli to give his side the lead after they initially trailed at half time to Japan in Houston on Monday. Casemiro levelled in the 56th minute but the last-32 tie looked to be heading for extra time until Guimarães' fourth assist of the tournament allowed Martinelli to slot home. Brazil had concluded their FIFA World Cup Group C campaign with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Scotland on Thursday at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami - with Guimarães setting up two of the Seleção's goals. Vinícius Júnior's first half brace left ex-Magpies coach Steve Clarke's Scotland with a mountain to climb, with Guimarães' inch-perfect cross nodded in at the back post by the Real Madrid frontman to make it 2-0 before the break. And the United skipper's lay-off was converted by Matheus Cunha on the hour to put the contest out of reach for Clarke's men - while Brazil and Guimarães, who played the full game, progressed as group winners after two wins and a draw from their three outings. Brazil had also beaten Haiti 3-0 in their previous game. Guimarães played for 81 minutes in Philadelphia, making way late on for Atalanta midfielder Éderson with the game already won. Before that, the five-time world champions had kicked off their campaign with a a 1-1 draw with Morocco at the MetLife Stadium a week earlier, with the United man claiming an assist for Vinícius Júnior's goal before being replaced by Danilo in the 80th minute. Yoane Wissa DR Congo's historic World Cup run came to an end at the last 32 stage following a 2-1 defeat against England on Wednesday. The Léopards took an early lead at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta through Brian Cipenga's strike before Wissa, who played the full 90 minutes, struck the post before the half-time break. Targeting a spot in the last 16 of the competition for the first time, DR Congo suffered late heartache as Harry Kane's brace proved the difference. Wissa scored twice in DR Congo's 3-1 victory over Uzbekistan last weekend - a result which sealed their passage to the knockout stages and set up a clash with the Three Lions. Uzbekistan took an early lead at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, but Wissa equalised from the penalty spot in the 68th minute then, after Fiston Mayele put DR Congo ahead, Wissa sealed the victory in stoppage time with a powerful shot from outside the box. He also won Player of the Match and now has three strikes in the tournament so far. Wissa had scored an historic goal for his side on his 38th international appearance in DR Congo's FIFA World Cup Group K opener against Portugal last Wednesday at the NRG Stadium in Houston. The 29-year-old started for his country and went close from range after João Neves' early opener for Portugal, before pulling his side level with a superb header on the stroke of half time - DR Congo's first-ever goal at the tournament. Wissa played the full 90 minutes as the Léopards - in their first World Cup finals for 52 years - turned in an impressive performance in a 1-1 draw they may feel they could have taken more than just a point from. He also played the full game against Colombia at the Estadio Akron in the early hours of Wednesday morning, but saw his side suffer a 1-0 defeat thanks to a goal from Crystal Palace's Daniel Muñoz. Anthony Elanga Sweden exited the competition at the Round of 32 stage following a 3-0 defeat against France on Tuesday evening. Elanga played the full 90 minutes at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey but Graham Potter's side were unable to contain the two-time World champions following Kylian Mbappé's brace and Bradley Barcola's strike. Having scored his first World Cup goal against the Netherlands, Elanga repeated the trick in the following game - a 1-1 draw against Japan - with a superb curling strike securing the Swedes' passage into the knockout stages. Elanga played the full game after an impressive cameo in his last outing. Sweden were 4-0 down when he'd entered the fray against the Netherlands in the 55th minute but he quickly pulled one back with a fine left-footed finish. Sweden eventually lost 5-1 despite Elanga's efforts at the NRG Stadium in Houston but his performance earned him a start on Friday. Elanga - who featured in Sweden's 3-1 defeat to Norway and a 2-2 draw with Greece before the tournament - had made his World Cup bow as a late substitute in the Blågult's 5-1 thrashing of Tunisia in their opening Group F fixture in the early hours of Monday morning. The 24-year-old came on for former United forward Alexander Isak in the closing moments at Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe, and was on the pitch as Yasin Ayari wrapped up an emphatic victory in the sixth minute of added time. Sweden finished third in their group to qualify for the knockouts. Nick Woltemade and Malick Thiaw Germany were knocked out of the World Cup in the early hours of Tuesday after losing on penalties to Paraguay. Nick Woltemade made his World Cup debut when he replaced Leroy Sané in the 88th minute, but regulation time finished with the scores level at 1-1 at the Boston Stadium. Malick Thiaw then entered the fray in extra time, coming on for Antonio Rüdiger in the 110th minute ahead of a penalty shoot-out. And Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill saved two spot-kicks - including one from Woltemade - to give his side a 4-3 shoot-out success, with Jonathan Tah blazing his effort over. Thiaw had made his World Cup bow in Germany's 2-1 defeat to Ecuador on Thursday night. He replaced Joshua Kimmich on the hour mark at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, but Woltemade remained on the bench. Germany topped Group E despite the defeat. Die Mannschaft, who last won the World Cup in 2014, kicked off their group campaign with a 7-1 victory against World Cup debutants Curaçao at the NRG Stadium in Houston, then came from behind to beat Ivory Coast 2-1 in the second match, with the United pair unused substitutes in both games.
