David Moller Wolfe became the final Wolves player remaining at this summer’s World Cup after helping Norway into the quarter-finals with victory over Brazil. Eight members of Cesar Peixoto’s squad began the tournament in North America, and after half went out at the group stage, followed by Sasa Kalajdzic in the last 32, two more saw their journeys come to an end in the round of 16. Raul Jimenez led the line superbly for Mexico in their thriller with the Three Lions in the early hours of Monday morning, while Jose Sa was on the bench for Portugal as they lost out to Spain on Monday evening. David Moller Wolfe | Brazil 1-2 Norway Ahead of the World Cup, David Moller Wolfe told wolves.co.uk that the aim for his country this summer was to go further than any Norway side has in World Cup history, and by claiming an incredible victory over Brazil in the last 16, that aim has already been achieved. Led by former Old Gold boss Stale Solbakken, the Norwegians were one of the dark horses of the competition, and their performances have so far backed that up. Wolfe was again in the thick of things as starting left-back, putting in a stellar display to keep another former Wolves man, Matheus Cunha, quiet for Brazil. Wolfe had a hand in Norway’s opener on 79 minutes, as his run into the box dragged a defender away and created space for Erling Haaland to latch onto Andreas Schjelderup’s cross. The assister and scorer combined again as the clocked ticked to 90, with the Manchester City striker adding his second. Although there was late drama with Neymar getting a consolation from the penalty spot, Wolfe’s side held on to reach the quarter-finals for the first time in their country’s history. Raul Jimenez | Mexico 2-3 England A last 16 tie against England at 2am on Monday morning offered Raul Jimenez the opportunity to break Mexico’s recent World Cup record and lead his country to the quarter-finals, however, it was the Three Lions who came out on top of a thriller in Mexico City. Jimenez had another great game for Mexico, being denied on several occasions by England stopper Jordan Pickford. However, the striker got his third goal of the competition in the second half of the contest to make it an uneasy last 20 minutes for England, reducing the visitors’ lead to 3-2. Stepping up to the penalty spot, Jimenez continued his impressive record to fire his effort into the corner of the net. Wolves’ number nine left everything out on the pitch as Mexico pushed to take the game into extra time, but England’s defence stood up strong to secure the win and set up a quarter-final with Wolfe’s Norway. Jose Sa | Spain 1-0 Portugal The battle of the Iberians saw Jose Sa’s Portugal face off against Spain in Dallas on Monday evening, but unfortunately for the side which also contains seven former Wolves players, their time in the World Cup came to an end thanks to Mikel Merino’s added time winner. The game looked as if it could have been heading either way, with chances falling to both teams throughout the 90 minutes, although the man keeping Sa out of the number one spot, Diogo Costa, was the busier of the two goalkeepers as he was forced into several key saves. However, the Porto keeper was beaten in the first minute of added time as Merino was played in on goal by a neat Ferran Torres pass before sliding his effort into the bottom corner, sending Sa and his teammates home at the last 16 stage. Coming up As the final Wolves player remaining at the World Cup, all eyes will be on Wolfe’s quarter-final with England on Saturday evening. The game kicks off at 10pm BST and will be shown on ITV. The winner of that match will take on either Argentina, Egypt, Colombia or Switzerland in the semi-finals.
