Hull KR 6 Wakefield Trinity 20: Daryl Powell's side prove they belong among Super League heavyweights with statement win

Trinity have looked every inch a top-six team since returning to Super League last year but this was the result that confirmed they belong in the highest bracket. Daryl Powell's men had already beaten Hull KR at Belle Vue last month. Becoming the first side to conquer Craven Park in more than a year, however, is the result that truly changes the conversation. Wakefield now have the belief to match their ambition. Relegated just three years ago, Trinity are now threatening to replicate KR's remarkable rise from strugglers to trophy winners. The irony is that the champions themselves are discovering how difficult it is to remain at the top once you get there. The relentless consistency that defined their treble-winning campaign has been replaced by a team that looks increasingly vulnerable. With 10 games still remaining, Rovers have already suffered more defeats than they did throughout the entire 2025 regular season. The ragged performance served up against Wakefield on Saturday has become a hallmark of their campaign. Such displays will inevitably fuel suggestions that their standards have slipped as they navigate the final months of Willie Peters' reign. Even in victory, the Robins have failed to convince in the same way as last year. For all Peters has achieved at Craven Park, the final chapter of his tenure must still be written. The challenge now is restoring the identity and intensity that turned KR into the competition's benchmark team. Wakefield are among the clubs lining up to topple the champions – and on this evidence, they are moving firmly towards the front of the queue. Caius Faatili stole the show with a second-half double but this was a victory built on Trinity's defensive resolve as they achieved the rare feat of keeping the Robins tryless on home soil. The significance of a first win at Craven Park since 2021 in a scrappy contest cannot be overstated. Wakefield had to dig deep to secure a third straight victory over Rovers, leaving Peters' side with another mental hurdle to overcome. There were echoes of last month's meeting at Belle Vue when ill-discipline shaped a dramatic contest. Having each lost two players to cards in the reverse fixture, the rivals were both reduced to 12 men in the early stages - but not before Harvey Smith had opened the scoring. Rovers were particularly loose early on and they could not hold out defensively, Smith scooting over from dummy-half to silence the Craven Park crowd. The mood of the home fans marginally improved when Tyson Smoothy - operating as an emergency half-back and goalkicker in the absence of Mason Lino, Jack Sinfield and Max Jowitt - hit the post from the tee. Peta Hiku's yellow card for a late hit on former KR outside back Will Tate ramped up the pressure on the home side but they produced arguably their best rugby of the half a man light. Their cause was helped by disciplinary lapses from their visitors as Wakefield found themselves on the wrong side of a tightly officiated contest. Rovers accepted two opportunities to wind the clock down with 12 men, allowing Rhyse Martin to get the scoreboard moving in the process. Josh Rourke was punished for backchat before Ky Rodwell saw yellow for slowing the ruck following a threatening break. The depleted visitors dug deep to keep KR at bay, ex-Trinity back-rower James Batchelor dragged down just short of the line after Smoothy had denied Mikey Lewis a breakaway try. Wakefield were rewarded for their defensive grit when Chris Kendall penalised the Robins in possession for a second time but Smoothy's goal was quickly cancelled out by Martin's third penalty, this time following an interference call. The contest rarely found any rhythm as errors and ill-discipline punctuated a frantic opening half. The game was there for the taking – and it was Trinity who seized the initiative to make the ultimate statement. One of the competition's most prolific front-rowers produced the decisive moments. His first try could be traced back to a break by Rourke after pouncing on an error from Lewis. From there, Wakefield marched upfield to give Faatili the field position to crash over from close range. The prop was at it again seven minutes later, forcing the ball down in heavy traffic to punish a mistake by Jai Whitbread. When Smoothy knocked over another goal after Rovers were penalised for obstruction in their own 20, Trinity were cruising to a Craven Park victory like few visitors before them during Peters' reign. There was no rally from the Robins as Wakefield dealt another blow to their title defence.
