The 'last pub before Norway' in Northumberland loved by NUFC fans and with its own football team

While all eyes will be on Miami on Saturday, as England battle Norway for a place in the World Cup semi finals, there's a pub thousands of miles away in Northumberland that has a vested interest in the big game. And that's because The Cresswell Arms in Newbiggin-by-the-Sea has a plaque up proudly declaring itself to be 'the last pub before Norway. We don't know about you, but we're not entirely sure we've recovered from England v Mexico yet, with fans put through the emotional ringer as England fought hard to win 3-2 at the much feared Azteca, prompting celebrations in Newcastle city centre that were echoed in towns and cities across the country, as people sacrificed a good night's sleep to cheer on the Three Lions. England's reward for beating host nation Mexico is a quarter final clash with Norway, who of course have the force of nature that is Erling Haaland in their ranks. Well, come rain or shine, one place that is definitely showing the game and expecting a few people in to watch is The Cresswell Arms and it's unlikely connection to Norway made it an extremely apt place to visit on the eve of the crunch fixture. Landlord Dave Haggerty invited ChronicleLive in on Friday for a look around and, while, of course the focus on Saturday is very much on England, the pub is already loved by Newcastle United fans, with it decked out with loads of Magpie memorabilia. There are a number England flags on display for the World Cup, but they are outshone by the black and white, but if you're looking for a quirky place with a Norwegian connection to watch the match, it most definitely fits the bill. And while we there we also got to find out that The Cresswell Arms also has its own football team - Cresswell Arms Newbiggin-by-the-Sea FC- which, in their own words was "founded with a purpose that goes far beyond football." The club, managed by new boss Connor Lashley, was created to support people living with mental health challenges and neurodiversity, while also helping to keep Sunday morning pub football alive in our town through the Cramlington Sunday District League.
